Global Debt Hits Record Near $353 Trillion as IIF Sees Shift From Treasuries
Global debt rose by more than $4.4 trillion in the first quarter to a record near $353 trillion, according to the Institute of International Finance. The group said the increase was fueled by government borrowing in the US and China, while the global debt-to-GDP ratio remained broadly steady at 305%.
The IIF also said foreign investors are showing signs of diversifying away from US Treasuries, with cross-border flows shifting toward European Union and Japanese government bonds as debt levels mount.
