Rubio’s Arms Package Includes $17 Billion for Gulf Air-Defense Missiles
Roughly $17 billion of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s previously disclosed Middle East arms package consists of sales of thousands of air-defense interceptor missiles and related support services to Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, according to a New York Times report citing US and congressional officials. The three deals are valued at $9.3 billion for Kuwait, $6.25 billion for the UAE and $1.625 billion for Bahrain, and expand packages Congress approved in 2019 and 2024.
The missile sales make up most of the broader $25.8 billion set of weapons agreements Rubio approved on an emergency basis on May 1 for Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE, according to a State Department spokesperson. The report said the three Gulf deals cover about 4,250 defensive interceptor missiles, while the overall package is about three times the amount initially disclosed when the agreements were announced last week.
