South Korea Halts Hormuz Mission Review After Trump Pauses Project Freedom
South Korea suspended its review of President Donald Trump’s call to join Project Freedom after Trump said he would briefly pause the U.S. operation to help ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran. The Blue House said 26 South Korean-flagged vessels were stranded around the Strait of Hormuz.
The shift came hours after senior U.S. officials had outlined how the military would support vessel movements through the waterway. Project Freedom had begun only a day earlier, and U.S. officials had said it had already helped two U.S.-flagged merchant vessels transit the strait. Bloomberg reported Trump shelved the operation after being warned it risked escalating a conflict he is seeking to end, while the suspension of the short-lived mission has left shipowners looking for workarounds.
