US Refiners Boost Jet Fuel Output Near Seasonal Record Amid Global Shortages
U.S. petroleum refiners have raised fuel production to a near-record for the time of year and prioritized jet fuel as worldwide shortages stemming from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz strain supply. Faster output still has not fully offset stronger export demand, leading gasoline and distillate stocks to deplete rapidly, though jet-fuel inventories have not seen the same drawdown.
The increase adds to efforts to ease aviation fuel strains after European regulators this week cleared the way for possible use of U.S.-produced Jet A in the bloc. U.S. gross refining margins have more than doubled since the start of the year and are among the highest since the start of the century after adjusting for inflation, incentivizing maximum crude processing and helping limit what otherwise would have been larger stock declines and sharper price increases.
