US Probe of Iran-Linked Oil Trades Reportedly Broadens to Nearly $7 Billion

businesslawenergy-marketsoil 246 posts · 76 accounts

U.S. regulators are reportedly investigating nearly $7 billion in oil short positions opened minutes before major Iran-related announcements, widening scrutiny of trades that appeared to anticipate market-moving developments in the conflict. The latest figure goes well beyond the $2.6 billion in trades previously reported under review and heightens questions about whether investors had advance knowledge of the announcements.

Earlier reports said the Justice Department and Commodity Futures Trading Commission were examining at least four trades that bet crude prices would fall shortly before statements by President Donald Trump and Iranian officials on matters including possible strike delays, ceasefire extensions and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Separate selling of more than $700 million in Brent and WTI futures shortly before reports of a potential U.S.-Iran agreement had already drawn scrutiny, though previous reporting said available market data did not identify the traders or establish insider trading.
