Justice Department Adds Firing Squad to Federal Execution Protocol
The US Justice Department said it is taking steps to strengthen the federal death penalty, including expanding its execution protocol to allow additional methods such as the firing squad. The department said it is also readopting the lethal injection protocol used during the first Trump administration, clearing the way for executions once death-sentenced inmates have exhausted their appeals.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the department is streamlining internal processes to expedite death penalty cases. He criticized the prior administration for refusing to pursue and carry out the death penalty against what he described as the most dangerous criminals, and said the department under President Donald Trump is again enforcing the law and standing with victims.
