Florida AG Subpoenas OpenAI in ChatGPT Mass-Shooting Liability Probe
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has issued criminal subpoenas to OpenAI as part of an investigation into whether ChatGPT could bear criminal liability for its alleged role in planning a mass shooting.
Florida said the probe was opened after prosecutors reviewed chat logs between ChatGPT and Phoenix Ikner, the gunman who carried out the April 17, 2025 shooting at Florida State University. The state said investigators will examine whether OpenAI can be treated as an aider and abettor under Florida law.
