Foreign Holdings of US Treasuries Hit Record $9.49 Trillion

Foreign holdings of US Treasuries rose by $200 billion in February to a record $9.49 trillion, according to Treasury Department data cited in the posts. Of that total, $7.76 trillion, or 84%, was held in long-term Treasury securities, with the remainder in short-term Treasury bills. Over the past 12 months, foreign Treasury holdings increased by $587 billion.

Japan, the largest foreign holder, increased its position by $14 billion to $1.24 trillion, its highest level since February 2022. The UK, the second-largest holder, added $17 billion to $897 billion, while China, the third-largest, trimmed its holdings by $1 billion to $693 billion.
