DOJ Ends Powell Probe, Clears Path for Warsh Confirmation
The Justice Department on Friday ended its criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, clearing an obstacle that had stalled Kevin Warsh’s confirmation as President Donald Trump’s nominee to succeed him. Jeanine Pirro said she directed her office to close the case as the Federal Reserve’s inspector general reviews the central bank’s building construction project costs.
Pirro said the watchdog had been asked to scrutinize building cost overruns that she said were in the billions of dollars and borne by taxpayers, adding that the criminal inquiry could be restarted if the facts warrant. The White House later said it is confident the Senate will swiftly confirm Warsh as the next Federal Reserve chairman.
