U.S. Boards Sanctioned Tanker Tifani as Hormuz Traffic Nears Halt
U.S. forces boarded the sanctioned tanker M/T Tifani without incident in the Indo-Pacific in a right-of-visit interdiction. The tanker was reported stateless at the time of boarding and is under U.S. sanctions for providing material support to Iran; tanker-tracking analysis says it has exported about 34 million barrels of crude out of Iran since 2020 and received at least 24 million more in ship-to-ship transfers in Southeast Asia for delivery to China.
The operation came as U.S. Central Command said 28 vessels have been directed to turn around or return to port since the start of the U.S. blockade on ships entering or leaving Iranian ports. Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was near a halt on Tuesday, with only limited movement continuing under Iranian restrictions and U.S. enforcement.
