Strait of Hormuz Shipping Halt Strands Ships and Deepens Oil Shock

politicsmaritimebusinessenergy-marketswar 41 posts · 14 accounts

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained largely halted, leaving about 800 vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf. The International Maritime Organization is preparing a humanitarian evacuation plan for crews, but it can only be activated after the conflict ends and the waterway is confirmed clear of mines.

The disruption is worsening a major oil-market shock. Trafigura's chief economist said supply losses have already reached about 1 billion barrels and could rise to 1.5 billion, while Gunvor warned stockpiles could be exhausted within a month if the war continues. Asia's biggest buyers, including China and India, have relied on floating Russian and Iranian cargoes and other workarounds, but those supplies are drying up, even as at least 26 Iranian shadow-fleet vessels are reported to have bypassed the US blockade.
