Cohere Buys Aleph Alpha in $20 Billion AI Deal
Canada-based Cohere is buying Germany's Aleph Alpha in a deal reported to value the combined group at about $20 billion. The transaction would expand Cohere in Europe and is aimed at building sovereign AI capabilities, with support from both governments.
Chief Executive Officer Aidan Gomez has said Cohere's strategy centers on independence, describing a "friends with everyone" approach and saying the company rejected early investment offers from Amazon, Google and Microsoft. He said large enterprises do not want to be locked into a single cloud provider or ecosystem.
