US Crude and Fuel Exports Hit Record as Middle East War Shifts Trade
U.S. exports of crude oil and petroleum products rose to a record nearly 12.9 million barrels a day last week, according to the Energy Information Administration, as the war in the Middle East pushed buyers in Europe and Asia to replace supplies lost from the Gulf. The U.S. also nearly became a net exporter of crude this month for the first time in weekly government data going back to 2001, reinforcing its role as a major energy supplier.
Tanker movements show how trade routes are being redrawn. More than 60 empty tankers headed to the U.S. in a single week, an all-time high, to load crude, refined fuels and other petroleum products for export. Europe is also increasingly turning to Nigeria’s Dangote refinery for jet fuel to offset lost Middle Eastern supply; the plant exported roughly 100,000 barrels a day in March, compared with Nigeria’s domestic demand of about 13,000 barrels a day.
